Bio
I witnessed the 80s/90s/00s college and indie rock explosion first hand and internalized it all, merging with my foundation of punk, new wave, and good old rock. I have been writing songs and refining my music for about a decade now as 72 Rats (with multiple earlier bands and projects across space and time). In 2022 I decided that I wanted to do something more than just the home recordings I had been working on, so I set off on a journey that has culminated in this EP. I started searching for people to join me in performing and refining my songs. No place better to start than a classic dive bar open mic, and Darrell's Tavern (Shoreline WA, near Seattle) perfectly fit the bill. It was a great place to find like-minded musicians who were up for supporting my endeavor. Mira hosts the open mic and Carl was there promoting his own band's show. The sound engineer at Darrell's Tavern, Michael Springer, has a recording studio - Peel Studios. Now I just had to pull it all together. I booked two days at the studio when everyone was available and scheduled a couple of rehearsals with Mira and Carl. From the first rehearsal, I knew I made the right choice. They had great ideas for their parts and some tweaks to the structures that really helped the songs shine. Once we got in the studio, I felt completely comfortable working with them and what we were doing with the songs. Michael made me feel right at home and our thinking and approach to recording aligned. We said 'fuck the grid,' and didn’t use a click track with the understanding that groove and feel are much more important than precision (but yeah, the parts have to be played right). Due to life (and a death) it took a few months to finish everything and get ready for the release. I went all out and pressed vinyl (green 180 gram/45 RPM) and CDs to compliment the digital release, and collaborated with designer Graeme Hunt on the artwork for the release, stickers, and t-shirts. Now that I have released this labor of love into the world, it is time for the world to hear it.
"Lab animals on the ISS breath and urinate, too, and we plan to reclaim their waste products along with the crew's. A full complement of 72 Rats would equal about one human in terms of water reclamation," says Layne Carter, a water-processing specialist at the MSFC.
Listen up and rock out.
